Model ChemLab Standard

Model ChemLab employs commonly used lab equipment and procedures to simulate performing an experiment.

Equipment includes:

  • Beaker, Buchner funnel, bunsen burner, buret, erlenmeyer flask, florence flask, evaporation dish, graduated cylinder, test tube, watch glass and calorimeter.

Procedures include:

  • Titration, decanting, filtering, heating, hot and cold water baths, mixing, collecting gases, labeling equipment, using indicators, and measuring temperature, weight and pH.

Model ChemLab's interface consists of two main windows, a text and a lab window displayed as two adjacent panels. The lab window displays the animated simulation. The text window is divided into three superimposed panels: Introduction, Procedure and Observations.

Its architecture uses plug-in simulation modules. Each module comes with its own list of chemicals, reactions and instructions. New experiments can be added by copying new modules to the Model ChemLab program directory.

Model ChemLab Pro and Standard both come with a large selection of pre-defined labs simulations covering the core topics of general chemistry: Acid/base reactions, cations reactions, electrochemistry, equilibrium, fractional crystallization, fractional distillation, gravimetric analysis, kinetics, redox reactions, stoichiometry, thermal chemistry, volumetric analysis, water quality and more ...

Model ChemLab Pro includes the Lab Wizard, a tool used to create custom simulations. It walks the user through the steps involved in producing a single distributable file known as a UDL (User-Defined Lab). Lab Wizard incorporates an extendible chemical database, stoichiometry reaction engine, password protection, and the deployment of unknown chemicals.

Registered users can access the Model Science Web Site to obtain upgrades, new simulation modules, and UDL files, as well as have their own simulations posted for distribution throughout the World Wide Web.
